The We One We Freewave invites you to jump

The We One We Freewave, the price cracker in direct sales, surprises with a strong combination of glide potential and radical turning characteristics. However, the board also appears smaller and more sophisticated.

You usually look for less than 1400 euros on the second-hand market. At We One, you get new goods in their original packaging. The fins we tested cost just under €140 each (Force Style Wave Single or the Thruster Set) and are not included with the board. At 7.3 kilos (without straps/fins), our test board didn't quite reach the targeted super-low weight, but manufacturer We One praises the high-quality carbon double sandwich construction in the deck with two layers of PVC plates and additional carbon reinforcements in the nose.

When inspecting the shape on land, the thickness of the board catches the eye: the deck is very cambered throughout and the board is thicker in the centre line than all the other test candidates. All of the manoeuvre-oriented strap positions only offer a small adjustment range, but they fit well. The pads are long enough on the heel side, even for large feet. Self-adhesive pads were fitted to the test board, in series production these should be permanently glued with resin. The centre fin is close to the tail, the side fins are parallel. From size 104 litres upwards, a carbon power box is installed in the centre, whereas the smaller models have a US box. The fin and straps are operated using the solid Allen key supplied, which also functions as a trim handle. The underwater shape is characterised by a predominantly sharp tear-off edge, a small rocker of just two millimetres and a "standard", straight planing surface of around 42 centimetres. The entire planing surface is otherwise dominated by a continuous, very clear V-shape with a strong double concave from the front loops to the bow.

Lively and easy to control

Where is the volume hidden here? Both positively and negatively, the We One seems smaller than all the other boards in the group from the sheet start to the speed loop. Ten litres seem to shrink away spontaneously when bobbing, the board is less stable in the water. When planing, jumping and manoeuvring, the Freewave feels as if you've switched from ski boots to airy sneakers. The lively riding behaviour runs through the entire characteristic: waggling, turning tightly - everything is easy and effortless.

How do you like this article?

The lively acceleration after a short pump (which the board gratefully accepts) and how well the otherwise manoeuvrable and rather wave-heavy board can maintain speed even in wind holes is surprising. The board flies over choppy waves with ease and the cushioning under the heels is comfortable. There are no limits to tight jibes, and with feeling, even wide radii are very fast and stable. The control also leaves nothing to be desired, the board needs active guidance at top speed, but then does exactly what you want and doesn't fidget at all.

Surf summary of the We One We Freewave

A particularly manoeuvrable, agile board with good wave characteristics that also delivers decent planing performance when ridden actively. As a comparatively small-looking, agile fun board with guaranteed fun, it is very suitable for experienced windsurfers, but less so for intermediate riders. You won't find more jumping ability in this class.
