With its flat shape, the Patrik F-Race really stands out even on land. On the water, this ensures excellent control.

Patrik’s Freerace shape is said to differ from pure race slalom boards mainly “through a slightly longer flat surface underfoot and smaller cut-outs”: for earlier planing and stable handling in rough conditions. The volume has been evenly distributed, and boxy rails are designed to allow lateral pressure against the fin and good water separation. Measurements confirm this visual impression. Measured at around 97 centimetres from the tail, the F-Race glides on the longest straight surface. This generous gliding potential is further enhanced as much as possible by a relatively shallow V at the front with concaves around three millimetres deep, which tapers into a very shallow flat V at the tail.

In the area beneath the front footstraps, no other board has less V. The minimal bow rise – the ‘scoop’ – of just 15 centimetres also ensures a flat planing angle. The deck is also kept consistently flat and level, which has proved perfect for planing or catching the wind. In the standing area behind the footstraps, the deck is pleasantly arched, and the thick, very soft pads complement this to provide the best possible comfort for your feet. The 44 G10 fin promises decent lift, whilst the Tuttle box can also accommodate the leverage forces of a foil from 120 litres upwards.

Freerace Club with no entry checks

The Patrik F-Race is one of those freerace boards that planes particularly easily. Even without leaning back, the board glides into a stable and smooth glide very early on and continues to glide steadily and unhindered even as you step into the bindings – welcome to the freerace club with no entry requirements. You can choose between freerace or sporty freeride strap positions; the cosy footpads and soft straps feel just like a pair of lined indoor slippers. However, the comfort-focused binding is a perfect match for the board. With normal power, the board races low over the water with minimal drag. The rounded nose sits stable and low over the water; there’s no tendency for the front to lift, and corrections are hardly ever needed. You can immediately tell that the board is designed to handle – and indeed can handle – large sails of over eight square metres and a great deal of power. If you’re riding in light to moderate wind conditions, you won’t be able to coax the full performance out of these boards, which start gliding very freely from the outset.

In return, the board treats you to a very stable and smoothly cushioned glide right from the start. This doesn’t change even in strong winds or at top speed. The F-Race always gives you a reassuring sense of security, because even if you relax briefly at the boom after a fast run and shake out your leg muscles, the board doesn’t play up. Something you’d hardly expect from a board that’s generally quite wide and flat: just how easily and smoothly it glides into a jibe. Despite the wide tail, comparatively tight turning radii are possible, and the foot pressure required remains well within manageable limits. Power jibes do not require increased attention or the finest sense of balance on your toes, as the board follows the course like a mule at a water trough. Wide carving jibes are actually great fun – something you can’t say about all boards in this category; here, the slightly narrower width and the substantial rails pay off, allowing for relatively easy edge catch and ensuring good speed on the rail.

surf’s verdict on the Patrik F-Race 130

If you’re looking for good performance and, above all, excellent control, the Patrik F-Race might be the one for you. Its glide angle is still quite flat in moderate winds, but when fully powered up, it allows for controlled riding and very good performance even for riders with intermediate skills. Its upwind performance is above average.

Planing characteristics; excellent control; all planing jibes
Tends to plane rather flat without much lift; foil-ready
