Peter Thommen is known to take a different approach to his boards than many other shapers. Now, with the FAST-R², he is launching a new line aimed particularly at amateur racers and anyone who likes to ride fast but still wants to be comfortable on the board. The development is based on the Gleitwunder concept and comprises four sizes: 107, 117, 134 and 154 litres.
The FAST-R² series deliberately breaks with current shape trends. "For too long, we have watched as the development of slalom and race boards has moved towards ever more extreme designs," says Thommen. The focus is often on downwind performance, while at the same time most surfers mainly ride courses across the wind - in other words, on a course for which many other designs are not primarily designed. According to the brand, many have complained about uncomfortable and difficult-to-ride boards, but have accepted this because they want to be fast. The new line is intended to combine speed potential and suitability for everyday use.
More about Thommen Boards:
Longer outlines form the basis of the FAST-R² construction. They enable smoother rocker lines and improve planing performance, especially in medium and weaker wind conditions. The underwater hull combines continuous double concaves with a V. This combination generates lift even at lower speeds and helps to increase and maintain buoyancy. Even in choppy water, the boards should run more smoothly. In addition, the FAST-R² models do not rely on oversized fins for lift. This difference is particularly noticeable when riding crosswind and across different wind forces. Moderate step rails ensure a comfortable stance and improve control. The lowered mast track position allows better sail positioning and more effective power transfer from the sail to the board, promises Thommen.
Each board comes with a customised board bag, foot straps and a set of screws. A fin is not included in the package - riders can choose their favourite fin. The two smaller models with 107 and 117 litres cost 2,350 euros each. The larger versions with 134 and 154 litres cost 2,450 euros.
