The Eagle proves that from a certain dimension upwards, even the slightly heavier construction can no longer prevent boards from gliding. Although the Eagle 186 does not quite match the super performance in passive planing of a Thommen or Blast but actually incredibly close. There are somewhat more noticeable differences in gliding, whereby the design plays a more important role.
But if early planing, easy handling and very uncomplicated jibing characteristics are important, then the Duotone Eagle is the right choice. This is because the tail has deliberately not been kept quite as wide as its stable mate BlastThe Eagle also makes consistent use of this theoretical advantage on paper in the practical test on the water: jibes are possible in various radii with significantly less foot pressure and yet also with very good planing potential and very stable cornering. The Eagle is therefore probably the best trainer for power jibes in this group.
But the board also impresses on the straights with its comfort. Despite its free planing position, it starts very softly when it does hit a wave. This seems to be due to the shape and construction. A lot of impact energy is simply absorbed here and the board has a more cushioned effect than a Thommen with the stiff carbon body. This combines a sporty gliding feel with plenty of control.
You don't have to be afraid of the high volume on the Duotone Eagle either. If you weigh 80 kilos or more, you can safely choose a board of this size if it has these qualities. Then even a powered-up ride with the 7.8 mm sail and well over 40 km/h is no problem. In combination with the very light and easy planing, the board covers a really wide wind range. Despite the heavier construction, the planing position is somewhat freer than on the Thommen due to the large fin and the shape - therefore a little more demanding in really strong winds, but with less choppy water contact.
The Eagle glides almost as well as the top boards and is very easy to control and, above all, comfortable. The same applies here: don't be afraid of the large width, on the contrary - the board glides particularly stable and easy precisely because of the width. It also masters jibes with excellent planing potential, making it the ideal base for jibing students. The ideal sails should be between 6.5 and 8.0 square metres.
