The Goya Carrera cannot deny its family genes: Like its brothers Bolt and Volar, the shape is kept relatively flat, with only a slightly visible upturn in the bow area and a flat deck. A closer look at the dimensions reveals that the Carrera is over ten centimetres shorter than the Volar with a comparable volume, and the straps are also mounted further out towards the edges. The board with the promising name is available in three sizes - 107, 117 and 127 litres. In addition to the sporty outer position, the Carrera also offers a slightly inwards offset position for the straps. At the rear of the 127 is a 42 Powerbox fin, cut-outs reduce the surface area of the tail, which should ensure a higher top speed. At a measured 6.48 kilos, the Carrera, manufactured in a carbon/glass sandwich construction, is appealingly light.
With its flat deck and stretched outline, the Carrera 127 is nicely balanced and stable in the water. Purely in terms of passive planing, the board is not one of the very best in the trade; a Volar with its longer planing surface should get going a little more easily. The positive thing about the Carrera, however, is that the powerful acceleration with the first gust more than makes up for this. As soon as you are in the straps and close-hauled, the board converts the sail pull very lively and 1:1 into speed. Even when fully powered up, the Carrera runs like a small hovercraft - the bow lies flat over the water, yet the board does not offer any sticky ride, but flies wonderfully controlled and sporty over the chop. With this board, you never have to worry about doing an uncontrolled wheelie or any other kind of exit.
Even though the Carrera doesn't fly quite as freely over the fin as a pure freerace board, it still gives a very sporty and fast feeling! Due to the flat deck, the back foot is a little overstretched in the straps at full throttle, but this is only relevant for sensitive ankles. In the jibe, the Carrera is more suited to medium and wide radii than fast hooks; if you pull through the turn with good technique and a little bit of a template, you can also glide through wonderfully. Because the board is so lively and light on the feet, you can even make jumps.
If you are just learning to planing and power jibing, the stable brother Volar is the board of your choice. As soon as you are confident in the straps and like to accelerate with freeride or camber sails, the Carrera offers you sports car performance with the comfort of a saloon.
