Gliding without whitecaps, cruising in nine knots of wind - on the wide freeriders you come a good deal closer to the dream of eternal gliding. Quite a few days passed during the big freeride test on the Cape Verde Islands, where only two surf testers made their way alone - on the extra-wide planing machines, combined with nine-square metre sails. Four brand-new shapes are once again pushing their way into the hotly contested market in 2004, but even the veterans that were already there last year are still keeping up with the competition. And they document - quite involuntarily - the progress of their competitors.
