In a class of its own. The Freedom reacts exceptionally well to foot control, even in full glide, and offers a good freeride feeling with a touch of pep and comfort.

The Bruch Freedom is one of a kind: Even on land, the shape of the big freerider is visibly different, and it also stands out on the water. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Bruch board?

The winner in the Freewave XXL class is definitely the Bruch board. No other board allows you to surf small or even larger waves with such ease, and the board also reacts promptly and clearly to every impulse from the ankle when planing - at least considering the volume. But also in comparison to the other models in the test - which plan across the water more like a manta ray - the Bruch board literally meanders through the chop, making it look as if it is ten centimetres narrower than the group average.

Shape differs from other freeride boards

Even on onshore inspection, the thin tail, rounded deck and slim rails stand out from the usual pattern. This makes the board seem a little more lively ("wobbly") than the flat flounders, even when starting to plane, and it needs one or two knots more wind (or a few metres more run-up) to really get up to speed. But then the board is very easy to surf, and your feet nestle comfortably between the grippy pads and the comfortable straps on the rounded deck. Additional internal plugs are planned, but were not yet installed on the test board. Experience has shown that these should be comfortable to use on the very "domed" deck.

The high-quality, performance-orientated fin probably also plays a part in the fact that the Freedom picks up pressure well in the medium wind range, planes freely and doesn't have to hide behind the competition in the speed duel on the straights. Nevertheless, the "wagging qualities" remain, the board goes downwind at full speed and luffs like no other. The board is a little demanding in the jibe: it needs more pressure and then turns well, but needs to be guided. Surfers with power jibing experience should be able to master this better than jibing students. Control and damping are still good on the board, with a good freeride feeling.

surf verdict of the Bruch Freedom 138

The Freedom combines the largest volume with maximum turning ability. The unusual shape is easy to surf, but seems a little smaller and is particularly suitable for areas with good planing wind and maybe even a little wave

Very easy to turn
