On land: Similar to the blue RRD, the Starboard is very thinned out at the front. The board is less extreme and five centimetres longer than last year.
On the water: A generous 77 centimetres of board width flit across the chop as flat and contactless as you could wish for. The bow seems to be frozen, following the wave movements with minimal up and down. Very similar to the slalom racer iSonic, the Futura moves in the hovercraft plane, one lane above disturbing choppy waves. This gives the Futura a very sporty feel, which should appeal to ambitious riders in particular.
The gybing characteristics - especially in relation to the immense width - are totally okay: in wide planing gybes, the board stays in the chute for a long time. However, you need more pressure and technique to edge it properly for full gas turns - even when compared to the JP Super Sport, for example. Instead of the standard fin, we only had a 46 mm fin available, but even this seemed big enough for sails up to 8.5 square metres.
surf recommendation:Very good freerace board for performance-orientated riders.
