With a stretched outline, low weight and solid double plugs, the Naish Assault Custom Thruster out of the box, but unfortunately without fins. For testing we used 18 to 19 mm centre fins and 10 to 11 mm side fins. The model has an extremely narrow stance - which takes some getting used to, especially for taller riders. The narrow tail makes the board look smaller than you would expect given its 89 litres. Nevertheless, the Naish planes effortlessly, accelerates powerfully and reaches a good top speed, which means you can quickly start looking for suitable ramps.
The shape also convinced us on the wave: the Naish pulls smoothly and with fine edge grip through the bottom turn and allows you to vary the radius at any time to pull up perpendicular to the wave lip. At the same time, the board always remains controllable and unfolds its potential even with lower riding skills. The narrow tail only makes it a little more difficult to bring the speed up to the lip of the wave in choppy waves and with little sail pull.
surf conclusion: A great all-rounder and more balanced than the stable brother Custom Quad thanks to a great mix of planing, control and fine turning characteristics ( here in the surf test ).
