With deeper concaves and more rocker, the new Patrik QTS-Wave has been tuned more radically than its predecessor. Will the wide range of use be retained?

Especially in the tail, the board has a visible amount of rocker to support turning. The pads are good and thick, and the rear strap is double-fixed to prevent twisting. The board has two rows of plugs at the front, the one offset inwards is primarily suitable for very narrow feet. Thanks to five built-in boxes, all fin set-ups from single fin to quad are possible.

Fireworks on the waves

Similar to the Flikka, the narrow tail of the Patrik QTS-Wave is also noticeable when bobbing through white water - a sensitive foot is required here. Fortunately, the board gets up to speed with the first gust. At 228 centimetres, the board is quite stretched and doesn't have an extremely lively, free planing position, but instead moves across the water as if on rails and with very good control. Especially in rough conditions and strong winds, this characteristic is helpful when looking for jump ramps in a relaxed manner.

The first turn against the swell gives you an idea of the fireworks that await you when riding the waves: The board can be edged rail-to-rail with ease, allowing you to throw tight turns in front of small waves out of your ankle. Short turns over the back foot, small slides and takas are easily possible. However, the QTS is even better suited to wide radii that are carved over the entire edge, as the board offers the necessary grip here. However, when varying the radii from wide to tight, the QTS Wave requires precise steering impulses to ensure that the rail grips cleanly. If you carve hesitantly and without a template, it can be difficult to stabilise the edge cleanly. However, if you have the right skills, the QTS-Wave is a board with no real limits that allows you to carve powerful turns, but which you can also steer effortlessly in wave moves such as 360s.

surf verdict of the Patrik QTS-Wave 87

The new Patrik QTS-Wave can do radical snaps just as well as wide carved radii, so the range of use is correspondingly wide. If you are mainly riding waves from knee to chest high, you should also consider the TS-Wave.
