The Severne Pyro is a well-known candidate, as it is one of the few boards in this group to start the new season unchanged. Will the Köster model still remain competitive?

The Severne Pyro is delivered with short 14 mm centre fins, but thanks to five built-in boxes, all fin configurations from single fin to quad are possible. The straps are soft and are double-screwed at the rear using the familiar Severne Allen key, which is also used for battens.

Powerful carving and smooth planing

Unsurprisingly, the board is still among the best planing ones, as it gets going without a noticeable threshold. However, when powered up, the planing position is very full, which sometimes causes the upwind edge to set in a little in chop, resulting in a slight drag. Our tip: move the straps and base plate slightly backwards. If you weigh over 85 kilos, you should also consider slightly larger centre fins to give the Pyro a little more liveliness and a freer ride.

On the wave, control on the edge is one of the board's absolute strengths, which also applies to fast carved power jibes in the chop. However, to turn really tight - whether over the back or front foot - you have to push noticeably harder than with the most light-footed models. In return, the Pyro pulls through the bottom turn absolutely safely and without a wobble. The easy-to-ride and compact shape is also exceptionally suitable for powerful carved cutbacks or wave moves such as takas or backside 360s, especially as you don't have to worry about arriving at the lip of the wave with too little speed with the Pyro.

surf verdict of the Severne Pyro Pro Wave 87

The Severne Pyro scores points in a wide range of conditions thanks to its plenty of planing power and great control. Only those who like to shake light-footed snaps out of their ankles will not be completely happy with this powerful board.
