The We Wave model from Austrian manufacturer We One has also been completely redeveloped

The We One We Wave is nominally the smallest board in the test group, but with a width of over 59 centimetres it fits in well. How does the compact shape perform?

All foot straps are solidly double-bolted, the pads are large and comfortable. Compared to the 2024 model tested by us the shape has been completely redeveloped: The fin boxes are now significantly shorter and in the tail, the board has shaken off the round and braking edges. What is surprising, however, is that the shape now has a comparatively sharp edge all the way to the front. Two ventilation valves should always ensure the best possible pressure equalisation when flying and during temperature fluctuations. In view of the lower price, it is bearable that the board is delivered without fins. We were recommended 16 mm centre and 7.5 mm side fins from We One, with which we also tested the board.

Free planing position, limits when carving

The redesign has done the We Wave a world of good in terms of planing performance, the board now gets up to speed immediately and runs freely when powered up without any noticeable resistance. Sheet in, aim for the first ramp and send a loop straight away - in this respect, the We Wave is absolutely on a par with the many other boards in this test group. If you take the speed out and turn the board tightly against the swell, the We Wave 83 also pulls round the corner pleasingly well. This also applies if you work small waves with tight snaps over the back foot.

However, as soon as you choose a slightly wider radius - be it in jibes or longer bottom turns - the edges, which are sharp all the way to the front, tend to blend in noticeably. It is then difficult to carve a clean radius and experienced riders in particular, who want to carve through the bottom turn with a lot of forward momentum and speed, are then limited in terms of shape. This is a shame as We One had already shown with the 2024 model that they are capable of building boards with good turning potential.

surf verdict of the We One We Wave 83

The new We One We Wave takes a big step forward in terms of planing and speed. On the wave, however, the shape is primarily suitable for riding off the back foot, as the railshape unfortunately hardly allows for clean carving.
