When we tested the JP Windsurf SUP last season (surf 9/2018), the verdict was extremely positive. In the 2020 season, the noble-looking wooden construction will be replaced by a sandwich construction, which is almost 50 euros cheaper (now 1699 euros), but also increases the board weight by a good 2.5 kilos to 13.8 kilos. The higher weight is largely due to the rubber pads now glued to the nose and tail, which protect the board from impacts even if it is set down roughly - a very useful feature in this board segment.
Fortunately, the additional ballast is hardly noticeable on the water, as the JP Windsurf SUP is still a board that is not primarily designed for planing: the Windsurf SUP (328 x 81 centimetres) is stable in the water with its 189 litres of volume and the folding centreboard, even with 90-kilo climbers on deck, and runs at a decent height on the cross. The large soft deck provides excellent grip, even barefoot, and children playing on the soft deck are also in good hands as there is zero risk of injury.
Thanks to its slight upturn and moderate length, the JP board also reacts well to steering impulses from children's and youth rigs - an advantage that the JP board does not share with all longboards or wind SUPs. The bend mentioned above also makes the board a good choice for playing around in mini waves. Whether with a sail or as a SUP, the Windsurf SUP can be used to surf knee- to waist-high foam rollers with a great fun factor.
surf conclusion: It's a shame that the JP Windsurf SUP 2020 is noticeably heavier, but it's bearable as this should significantly improve its durability. The JP Windsurf SUP covers a wide range of uses and therefore a large target group. It is ideal for cruising in light winds through to the first gliding experiences, as a family board and also as a fully-fledged SUP for paddling short tours or even in the waves.
