Test freeride foils 2024: features and details of boards and foilsPhoto: Stephan Gölnitz
We tested five foils for relaxed freeriding on Lake Garda.
In addition to the test in the new surf 10-2024, you can find more details and information about the tested freeride foil boards and the corresponding freeride foils here.

This board and foil class takes the fun from classic light wind freeriding with 7.5 metre sails into the 8 to 14 knot range - with sails under seven square metres! Five combinations of board and foil have been tested, including two sporty representatives and two sets that make foiling easier than ever without getting boring. You can find the test reports in surf 10-2024 and an additional overview of the details here.

2024 Duotone Sting Ray 126 SLS + Duotone Aero Free 1250

The Duotone set impressed in the test with a comfortable stance on the board with good foiling characteristics and a high-quality foil that is already quite sporty for the freeride class.

Gunsails Hy-Foil 1350

The best value in the test is impressive and has nothing to hide, especially in terms of performance. The foil was tested in the JP Free-Foil 130.

JP-Australia FreeFoil 130 + NeilPryde GlideWind HP 1300

In the test, the board showed consistently good freeride foiling characteristics, whereas the corresponding foil, which has already been available for several seasons, now looks sophisticated in the current competition.

Severne Alien 125 + Severne RedWing 1400

Red colour indicates danger - this does not apply to the Alien. The Alien and RedWing test shows how easy freeride foiling can be. Fluid, dry foil jibes are a realistic goal.

Starboard Freeride Foil + Starboard Super-Cruiser 1300

If you think the simplicity of the Severne foil can't be beaten, we recommend a round on the Starboard set.

Deputy Editor in Chief surf

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
