Tried out: E-Foil from Audi Designer in a practical check
E-foils are a hot topic and because these electric vehicles will probably soon be poaching in our waters, we wanted to know what we're up against. Developer Franz Hofmann, who is developing the "e-foil" at Audi, is convinced that "in a few years' time, you'll find a foil board like this on every yacht".

The designer sees the device more as an e-bike on the water: for tours and for exploring rivers and lakes - over an hour's travelling time is good for this. Impression of our first round trip on Lake Walchensee: The jet drive is integrated into the foil deep in the water: safe and almost inaudible. The foil cuts cleanly through the water and leaves no more than a few millimetres of wave behind. For bathers on the beach, the disturbance factor is therefore zero. It was surprisingly easy for our tester - albeit with a lot of windsurfing foil experience - to get on the wing, the speed at half throttle was already impressive at just under 27 km/h after a few minutes, as was the feeling and "45 km/h is possible" claims Franz Hofmann - and that sounds plausible. It's really fun in calm conditions, but the sporting possibilities are probably limited in the long term compared to windsurfing or kite-foiling.

Will the "e-foil" nevertheless become the Segway of rivers and lakes or will it remain an exclusive water scooter for millionaires? The further development of the initially targeted price of 10,000 euros is likely to play no small role in this.

Deputy Editor in Chief surf

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
