The decision whether to buy a family van or a camping vehicle doesn't have to be a final one. After all, if you make the best possible use of the space available in the Caddy & Co, you can definitely harmonise everyday life and suitability for short surfing trips. Stephan Wolff explains how his Smart Camper modules can help.
Stephan, you are the man behind Smart Camper and build modules for vans. What is your concept?
I've driven camper vans, motorhomes and Bullis for years, but big cars are a drag in everyday life. I wanted a family car for everyday use that I could also take camping. Then I researched what modules were available on the market. The standard solutions were all too high for me and the living space was too cramped. As I come from an interior design background, I made a very low module, which I am now selling as a start-up company.
What exactly does the module look like?
The module is manufactured entirely here in Freiburg and consists of several pull-out elements containing a cooker with windbreak, stainless steel sink, water tanks with shower head and storage space. The special feature is the low height of just 37 centimetres, which means that the living space is not so restricted. Most other modules are 45 to 50 centimetres high. My module is suitable for typical vans, e.g. the VW Caddy, Citroen Berlingo, Renault Kangoo, Nissan NV200 or comparable models. It is made of lightweight aluminium profiles and multiplex panels and is anchored to the vehicle floor. As an option, you can also purchase a sleeping module and even a matching mattress if required.
Keyword "anchor". Do I have to remove the module to be able to use the vehicle as a car again?
No, all seats remain fully usable when the bed and kitchen module are installed. Of course, you only have to fold down the bench seat if you want to fold out the bed. However, if you ever need the entire load compartment, the module can be removed in a few simple steps.
What do the modules cost?
The kitchen module costs 1600 euros, the bed another 390, and you can also choose the mattress width yourself, depending on how much space you need. What used to bother me about fully converted camper vans or Bullis is that the conversion is often still great, but the vehicle itself gives up the ghost, e.g. due to rust problems or other defects. This is not a problem with modular solutions, you can simply put the same conversion in the next vehicle or sell it again.
Where can I get the modules?
I don't have an online shop yet, on my homepage at www.smart-camper.de but you will find all the contact details.
