The annual surfing competition is taking place in the French coastal town of Brizan when a mysterious cloud suddenly appears in the sky and triggers a huge wave. Eleven surfers are swept away and swallowed by the sea. After all hope seemed lost of finding the surfers alive, they reappear on the beach five hours later. As if nothing had happened. But this is a fallacy, because they are no longer the same. Mysterious changes are noticeable in those who have returned: Little Thomas' eye colour has changed, for example, and suddenly he has clairvoyant abilities. Max only feels comfortable under water and Mathieu can heal people with his bare hands. The cloud also has an effect on the town itself: All of a sudden, the earth cracks open and a large fissure appears. When the cloud descends on the village a second time, a large piece of land is swept into the sea.
To prevent further misfortune, Irène Lecap, the mayor of Brizan, plans to destroy the cloud. The natural phenomenon is to be blown up with the help of a drone. At the same time, chemistry teacher Ben Lebon carries out his own investigations, which indicate that there is a strange connection between the eleven surfers and the cloud. The cloud seems to be alive. Ben fears that destroying the cloud could harm the surfers and tries to prevent the plan by any means necessary - to no avail. After the blast, however, the cloud does not disappear but spreads and continues to rise.
When surfer Max finds the GPS tracker on the beach that he was wearing at the time of his disappearance in the sea, there is hope of finding out more about the strange events. In fact, the video recordings contained in the tracker provide the crucial key to combating the cloud. But do the inhabitants of Brizan have enough time to act?
