Tracking tool: The latest Amazfit T-Rex in the test
T-Rex put to the test on the foilboard | Stephan Gölnitz
The Amazfit T-Rex offers a comparatively affordable alternative for tracking and navigation with a price of 229 euros and very extensive functions. The detailed test shows how the watch performs on the water.

The design of the new Amazfit T-Rex watch is designed for outdoor use and robustness. Four non-slip push buttons facilitate operation (otherwise equipped with a touch display, of course), while a solid metal bracket on the side protects sensitive sensors. The wide rubber strap is comfortable to wear and is particularly well secured behind the clasp to prevent accidental opening. The Amazfit T-Rex is available e.g. from Amazon or Sports cheque available.

The now significantly larger AMOLED display looks brilliant, sharp and bright. It is also easy to read in sunlight. It can also be operated with wet fingers.

As a technical innovation The five satellite systems that can be used to ensure fast, precise localisation at all times are particularly noteworthy. Two systems are used simultaneously for precise localisation.

The Amazfit T-Rex also has sensors for

  • Pulse
  • Oxygen saturation
  • Air pressure
  • Accelerations

As a "smartwatch"the watch displays notifications, current weather forecasts or can be used to control a music player (on the mobile phone).

Still 47 per cent battery after eight days with 5.5 hours of training tracking

In practice, the Amazfit T-Rex proved to be a well-suited tool in the testt. Firstly, thanks to its good endurance: in eight days, we recorded a total of 5.5 hours of tracking - in kite, bike and SUP modes. The watch does not have its own #windsurfing mode; instead, you should use kitesurfing, which, according to the manufacturer, comes closest to windsurfing in terms of movement patterns. The GPS setting was always set to maximum accuracy. Heart rate measurement throughout the day (every ten minutes) and sleep monitoring were also activated. After eight days of everyday use, the battery level was still a good 47 per cent.

All the tracks seemed very precise, When cycling, the two tracks can be recognised on the outward and return journey. When measuring speed, we found that the maximum speed displayed did not always correspond 100 per cent with the highest speed on the track - with marginal deviations.

With the latest update the Amazfit T-Rex offers navigation options, the tracks can be exported as GPX files and displayed in other programmes. This means that real GPS tinkerers will also get their money's worth.

The app offers a wide range of optionshealth and fitness. You can easily zoom into the recorded tracks, but not into the recorded speed measurement. This means that with long recordings, the speed values cannot be tracked at extremely close intervals. However, you can still get a good overview and find the individual peaks. The speed and HR curves (bottom image) can be scrolled sideways with a finger and the snapshots viewed. However, we were only able to view the curves at the maximum display width (smartphone). The analysis can certainly be refined with a GPX export, which we have not yet been able to try.

The required APP "Zepp" runs on Android and iOS and offers numerous display layouts.

surf conclusion: With many functions and high precision, the Amazfit T-Rex 2 is a real proposition if you can do without the very finest speed analyses. The tool is simply fun to use for many activities. However, the apps available for installation are still limited and a calculator installed on a trial basis followed its very own mathematical rules.
