If you hide your keys in your car before going watersports, you're in good company. And won't see a cent from the insurance company in the event of theft. Developer Christoph Blöcker explains why the Keyfender could be the solution.

In the past, every windsurfer took their Bulli key with them on the water. Since the advent of radio keys, the trend has been to hide them again - with considerable risk.

surf: Christoph, why do you have to take car keys on the water from a legal point of view?

Insurance companies require that you do not leave your car keys out of their care. If you hide the key in the car and it is stolen, the insurance company will not pay you a cent.

There is also the option of securing your keys in the key safe in your car.

Yes, but it is clear what is inside such safes. If the key safe is broken into and the contents of the car or the entire vehicle are stolen, the insurance company will not pay out either, because you have breached your duty of care. The insurance company wants to see all the keys, and if you can't produce them, the insurance is already out.

Taking them with you is a problem in times of radio keys.

Exactly. That's why we developed the Keyfender, in which you can also pack remote keys in a watertight container and take them out on the water under the neo. The good thing is that the remote control can be operated at any time via an elasticated window. The cover is pressure-resistant, floats and is watertight to a depth of ten metres.

What does the Keyfender cost?

The Keyfender costs 29.90 euros and is available in many surf shops or at www.keyfender.de available.
