The discreet design of the harness is complemented by a futuristic-looking, robust aluminium hook with quick release. This is firmly secured with the fastening straps and can be used with or without the hook plate, which is designed to prevent the harness hook from slipping. An additional strap on the optional hook plate prevents unintentional folding up. To support the back, NeilPryde uses a plastic shell made from Surlyn - a material that is light, robust and yet flexible. The so-called back-base system, a PE element attached to the inside of the harness shell that adapts to the contours of the back, absorbs the tensile forces and distributes them very evenly.
When you try it on, you immediately notice that the Proton has a firm grip on you. Once adjusted, nothing slips where it shouldn't go. Compared to other models, the height of the back shell is slightly lower, which greatly favours freedom of movement. The padding is very soft and comfortable, and the PE insert provides perfect support for the lumbar spine. Even with large sails, you never had the feeling that your back could start to pinch. Whether in a wetsuit, lycra or topless - the Proton fits perfectly. Only if you are switching from an extremely soft and loose-fitting harness could the changeover to the Proton take some getting used to, as you first have to familiarise yourself with the pronounced support.
The NeilPryde Proton is a perfect harness for people who are looking for very good support for their back without sacrificing freedom of movement.
