Freemove is a little bit of everything. We tested just how much all-rounder the Patrik X-Cross 5.9 is.

The Patrik X-Cross is launched as a freemove sail in six sizes. The wide Dacron sheet in the luff is striking, while the foot is comparatively wide for a freemove sail. The profile is stabilised by five battens. The sail is predominantly made of monofilm, but thick grid material is used in the stress zones in the foot. Kevlar patches on the lower batten and on the top protect the areas subject to particular stress.

The Patrik X-Cross on the water

When starting off, the X-Cross 5.9 initially feels very full in the hand, it does not appear extremely agile - rather powerful and free-running. It is important that the sail is not under-trimmed at the luff. It works ideally when the loose leech extends to the area of the third batten from the top. On the other hand, you can be very sparing with the tension on the trim sheet. Rigged in this way, the sail top can twist nicely and the sail feels comfortable when planing. The soft profile absorbs shocks excellently, it is balanced and extremely controllable in the hand - annoying re-trimming is hardly necessary. In manoeuvres, the X-Cross pulls powerfully through the turn, the battens rotate as smooth as butter and ensure a pleasant manoeuvring feeling, even if it is definitely not one of the absolute featherweights in this class.

Surf summary of the Patrik X-Cross

The X-Cross impresses with its planing power, great control and smooth manoeuvring, especially as a motor for freemove and freeride boards with a single fin. It is not suitable as a playful freewave sail for multifin boards, and for regular wave use it is better to opt for the 5 Wave model.
