On land: The Excess is fully X-Ply equipped, thicker than Hot Sails Maui or Gaastra, for example, and is one of the sails with particularly high-quality equipment. However, this also results in a higher price. The new protector is thick and yet easy to fold away. The Excess is also recommended and tested for standard masts.
On the water: It's not for nothing that the Excess is the absolute station favourite. The sail combines all the virtues of a good freeride sail - it is stable, very easy to control in a single trim, pleasantly damped and rotates quite easily in manoeuvres without any noticeable batten rotation. The complete X-Ply equipment does somewhat obscure the view through the sail window, but should ensure long durability.
Overall, we liked the pleasantly springy, damped profile, which proved to be very versatile and covers a wide wind range. We recommend not trimming it too flat, with a little more belly it offers the best combination of power and handling. With some extreme freestyle moves you may feel the profile change a little more, but it remains one of the lightest sails for standard manoeuvres.
surf recommendation: The Excess covers an extremely wide range of use, we would only recommend the Hellcat among NeilPryde's camberless sails to fanatical full-throttle riders. For freeriders, freestyle beginners and occasional wave use, the Excess is the first choice.
