No sail in the test conveys more race feeling than the Point-7 AC-2, which comes at the expense of comfort and requires a firm grip.

Broad shoulders and strong legs - the black sails attract certain types of surfers like some dog breeds attract typical owners. In the case of the Point-7 Freerace sails, this is understandable, as you can really get to grips with trimming the luff and pressing the cambers. After some effort, you are rewarded with an aerodynamically extremely attractive profile: with a harmonious transition from the deep belly in the boom area to the flat and very wide twisting top. The angle of attack of the Point-7 AC-2 is also rather flat, with the lowest point of the profile comparatively further back in the sail. The mast sleeve appears martially wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, making it waterstart-friendly.

So: sunglasses off, AC-2 on, UV protection behind the tinted film included. With a hearty pull on the boom to rotate the camber to the right side for the beach start, you jerk yourself into the centre of attention. Because either there is an unmistakable rumble or the camber needs to be pushed against by hand - a peculiarity that, in our experience, "grinds in" after a few more than our test kilometres. Without clew tension, the sail is long on the boom (tip: it is better to use a longer and wider boom), the passive planing power is mediocre, really effective pumping of the rigid wing requires good fitness.

But then you should lash yourself securely to the harness, because the Point-7 AC-2 knows no stopping and only pulls forwards with maximum vehemence, directly and tightly sprung. It offers top speed performance from mid-wind upwards, with maximum pressure point stability and moderate holding forces - which allows for relaxed speed surfing even in strong winds.

However, it will never be a handling miracle: at the water start, the unruly cambers and the deep profile once again get in the way, and in the jibe the black power only shifts completely with a powerful jolt, including the camber sitting tightly on the mast. No sail conveys more race feeling. In return, you sacrifice some comfort, but it is still more suitable for everyday use than a pure racing sail

surf summary of the Point-7 AC-2 7.8

The Point-7 AC-2 is a top sail for clearly speed-orientated use on equally fast boards with high-quality fins - anything else would be a waste of energy. Because the engine delivers more than enough of it, at the latest from medium planing winds.

very fast, real race feeling, best controllability in strong winds
high trim forces
moderate gybe handling
