With no other freerace sail is it easier to surf really fast than with the Severne Moto. With a short boom and RDM mast, it is light as a feather in the hand, only at the lower glide limit are others better.

The new Moto, a hybrid of overdrive and turbo, is making a splash in the freerace world. The wider mast sleeve comes from the Overdrive. From the Turbo come the two cambers under (!) the boom and - the RDM mast. The camber is clearly visible in the transparent X-Ply mast sleeve and can be adjusted with a spacer.

The continuous mono film looks visually solid thanks to the use of colour and is actually very thick in the lower area. The cross batten is protected, which is very useful because you can surf the sail with a very loose outhaul. The cut-out for the boom is wide open for easy mounting, the protector is a few centimetres too short to completely cover the base plate. The sail is rolled the other way round, so "strange" booms and extensions don't always make for the most comfortable setup. The trim block with four rollers also requires a Severne extension.

Less sensitive to trimming and easy to control

Without optical trimming aids, you can't find the luff trim immediately, but this is less of a problem as the sail reacts very insensitively to small subtleties. The outhaul can be left very loose not only for medium winds, but also for solid winds.

Trimmed so that it rests against the boom, it glides off powerfully and still looks surprisingly small and manageable. The centre of effort feels a little further forward and down, which provides good forward pull and doesn't overwhelm even smaller surfers. Thanks to the short boom, the sail always remains very easy to control and never pulls on the back hand (tension the outhaul a little in very strong winds). It is also direct on the RDM, but a touch more agile than all the others and with very light damping. After a good planing, it can only not quite keep up with the strongest sails in the lowest wind range, but in medium to strong winds it is easier to surf really fast with any sail than with the Moto. In gybes, the Moto is unrivalled in its lightness and agility, playing the trump card of the short boom mercilessly and superiorly.

Surf summary of the Severne Moto 7.8

With a short boom and RDM mast, the new Severne sail is much easier to handle and smaller than conventional sails, but still delivers impressive performance. If you are looking for freerace performance with comfort, the Moto is the perfect choice.

Appears light, small and compact; good performance
