The NeilPryde Ryde is not to be trifled with in light winds, the sail always wants to be first. Only the Ezzy can be rigged even more planing, but is not quite as fast in light planing winds. In light wind trim, you have to accept a smaller wind range as a limitation, because the sail then draws its power from a deep belly in the rather soft profile and wants to be brought on course with somewhat higher and noticeable holding forces. However, this can be noticeably adjusted with a little more pull on the clew, the sail only loses a little planing performance by re-trimming and gains control and handling enormously in return. The usable wind range in our favourite trim (luff pulled one centimetre above maximum) is even above average.
The sail retains its characteristics with a slight pull on the back hand to accelerate, but is tighter, subjectively fast, easy to put down on deck and pulls into the jibe with gusto. It is not the lightest sail in the turn, but is easy to steer and willingly follows beginner jibes, carving jibes or even a duck jibe. The profile is never completely flat, the Ryde does not want to be a pure manoeuvre sail, but simply offers a well-rounded compromise between power and jibe potential.
Gliding, fun in moderate winds
