Freeride sails around 6.5 square metres are great all-rounders. We tested nine 2023 models - here's a first look!

Hardly any other group is as versatile as this one, said a surf tester. Freeride sails with around six and a half square metres can be very similar to freemove models (such as the RRD Evolution), but on the other hand they can almost look like sporty freeracers (such as the NeilPryde Speedster).

Some of the sails in our test are ideal for intermediates who are just getting to grips with looping and working on jibing. Others appeal to ambitious freeriders who want a lot of speed with easy handling. The details of the test sails are just as different as their characters. The Ezzy Cheetah stands out in particular: there are well thought-out trimming aids at each end that make it easy to set up. It can be so simple!

Tobi is our digital man, he looks after the surf website and social media channels and gets on everyone's nerves every morning by asking for more pictures and videos. His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
