On land: Gaastra's workmanship and equipment have always been impeccable, and the new X-Ply sail material is a further upgrade. However, the protector, which is also new, is more of a step backwards because it is simply sewn too close to the mast and is too long. But Gaastra promises to improve this soon. The Manic is very flat on land, while the IQ has a slightly higher profile.
On the water: The Manic is designed as a radical "off" sail - and that is its greatest strength. Unfortunately, the 4.7 was not as convincing as the 5.3, which was also tested (surf 4/2013). The flat profile is hesitant to get going, requires very precise positioning and hardly develops any additional vapour when pumping. The fun really only starts when you have caught the wave, are happy about the perfect "off" and the annoying fidgety behaviour on the straights can be transformed into maximum agility in the turns. This sail is optimised for handling, control when hacking and "off". Drive and power had to be largely sacrificed for this.
