Is it really worth the extra cost for the high-end "Carbon", "Pro" and "Ultralight" models? To find out, we tested the premium models from five brands against the standard designs. You can get a first look at the test sails and all the features here.

In recent years, it's not just wave sails that have become lighter and lighter. New materials and technologies mean that standard 5.0 sails are scratching the three-kilo sound barrier. However, some brands also offer special "carbon", "pro" or "light" models that are designed to go one better. Special laminates and grille materials reduce the weight significantly in some cases, but are also noticeable at the till. But is the extra price worth it? Or is the nominal weight on the scales ultimately not the decisive factor? Our upcoming wave sail test, for which we compared the standard models from Duotone, Goya, NeilPryde, S2 Maui and Severne with the premium versions in the 5.0 square metre size, is intended to answer precisely these questions. Some of the results are quite surprising - you can read them in issue 1-2026 or, of course, here on the surf website.
