Complementary to the Blacktip model (HERE is a test of the 2024 model) manufacturer Simmer Style has another iron in the fire with the EvoQ. Up to size 4.7, the EvoQ is designed as a four-batten sail, from size 5.0 upwards as a five-batten concept. With a measured weight of 2.75 kilograms, the model is one of the lightweights in the group - at least on the scales. The features are very impressive, the entire sail is made of lightweight mesh material and the batten tips are protected at the front with Kevlar patches. The protector is also successful because it is long enough and easy to fold. Overall, the EvoQ is one of the concepts with a deeper profile, which it draws out of the mast sleeve. Trim adjustments are also made more via the boom than elsewhere, especially in strong winds you can pull the outhaul a little more.
The Simmer EvoQ loads up noticeably even when wobbling around with little sail draft and stabilises comfortably in the hands. The right angle for the wind is easy to find, all in all the sail gets up to speed excellently and offers plenty of planing power to get safely through the shorebreak or to go straight on the hunt for suitable jump ramps. Compared to its sister model, the Blacktip, it delivers more power on the waves and when accelerating.
Fortunately, the pressure point stability of the Simmer EvoQ is maintained over a wide wind range, even with a medium trim. The top twists harmoniously and dissipates excess energy well, which also means that the light, agile handling that is immediately noticeable in light winds is also found in rough, strong wind conditions. Only in the sleeve opening area slight vibrations were sometimes noticeable in strong winds.
The EvoQ also impresses in terms of handling: it rotates as smooth as butter and flattens out well in manoeuvres or when riding waves. Although it does not offer uncompromising off-characteristics, it always provides a little draft on the back hand, which helps to pull through the turns with enough drive and speed - especially in less perfect wind and wave conditions.
The Simmer Style EvoQ has convinced us! It offers a lot of planing performance on flat water and in the waves and combines this with very good control and great handling. This makes it suitable for a large target group, from occasional wave surfers to professionals. And it is by no means the wrong choice as a strong wind sail for flat water.
