The Dynamic Alu is available in three sizes - with 2000, 1700 or 1400 front wings. We tested the 1700 cm2 size. The front wing is designed as a moderate high-aspect wing and is intended to combine early take-off with fast top speed. The front and rear wings are made of carbon and sit on a 76 centimetre long aluminium fuselage.
The screws are fastened with thick and solid 8 mm Torx screws. With the right tools, you can tighten them firmly without having to worry about ruining the screw heads immediately. The 85 mm aluminium mast seems quite stiff, only the connection of the mast to the adapter plate is not 100 percent stiff - a small shortcoming that the RRD Foil shares with many competitor products. The mast and fuselage are screwed together using two thick Torx screws, although you should check that they are tight from time to time. The RRD Dynamic Foil is also available with a light and stiff carbon mast, but at 2649 euros, the carbon version is almost twice as expensive as the version with an aluminium mast (1399 euros).
With the 1700 front wing we tested, the RRD Dynamic Alu Foil is easy to pump when first starting off and stabilises immediately after take-off. If you get your wing really tight, you will be rewarded with decent acceleration, the speed level is moderate, but allows jumps and freestyle tricks without any problems. We particularly liked the control, as the RRD Foil flies stable around all axes and is forgiving of the occasional misstep in manoeuvres. Even in strong gusts, the tendency to let the bow rise uncontrollably remains pleasingly low. Despite the stable water position, which also makes life easy for wing beginners, the foil is by no means sluggish and can also be pumped comparatively well for a high-aspect wing - for example, to stay in the air for a long time at the end of manoeuvres or when surfing small swells. Another positive aspect: once in the air, the foil offers stable lift even at low speeds, e.g. in wind holes.
The RRD Dynamic Alu impresses as a high-performance foil with very good control, average speed potential, forgiving handling and, all in all, a large wind range. This makes it suitable for wing beginners who are looking for a wing for cruising and uncomplicated take-off, as well as for ambitious freestylers and even for use in swell waves. The 1700 should be an ideal all-round solution with a wide range of use for heavy riders between 70 and 90 kilos.
