US manufacturer Slingshot has launched a revised foil range for the new season. This also includes the Phantasm model range. We have extensively tested the Phantasm G 900.
The Slingshot Phantasm G900 Foil makes a lovingly equipped impression at first glance. The foil set comes with covers for the wings, a bag for the mast and a bag for the entire set. The set also includes the appropriate tools and Teflon gel. As usual with Slingshot, individual components can also be replaced or upgraded (e.g. with a carbon mast).
The tested foil set includes the front wing with a span of 900 millimetres. The wing tips of the 1263 cm2 wing are visibly pulled downwards. To avoid mistakes during assembly, the correct screw lengths are printed directly on the screw holes. M6 Torx screws are used throughout. The set also includes a 92 mm aluminium mast, which appears quite slim but still offers good rigidity. The mount is significantly wider at the connection to the fuselage in order to achieve the largest possible connection between the mast and fuselage. Overall, the foil impresses with good fitting accuracy.
Despite its size of only 1263 cm², the Slingshot Phantasm G 900 Foil takes to the air quite well and harmoniously. The inflow is stable and fast, in our opinion even at noticeably lower speeds than, for example, on the kite we tested. Slingshot Phantasm Wing 926 . Once in the air, the Phantasm G 900 is very stable around the transverse axis ("nose up, nose down"), which is also due to the 71 centimetre long fuselage, which provides a lot of safety. Around the longitudinal axis, the foil offers very good agility, allowing you to ride wonderfully smooth and tight radii. You benefit from this in manoeuvres such as foil 360s or tight jibes, but above all when riding small swells or surf waves. Here, the foil allows for beautiful turns and also offers a surprisingly good glide for this size.
Conversely, the foil also needs to be loaded a little carefully during manoeuvres. If you are just starting out with foiling and are naturally more rough and ready, you will certainly find the Slingshot Phantasm G 900 a little too demanding and agile. The speed potential of the foil is extremely acceptable, we were able to comfortably reach speeds of 34 to 35 kilometres per hour during our test runs in the normal wind range. Pleasingly, even in the high speed range, the foil is very stable in the airflow and doesn't do anything unexpected - the best conditions for jumps and freestyle tricks.
The Slingshot Phantasm G 900 Foil impresses with its high-quality equipment, great manoeuvrability and good speed potential. It is primarily suitable for wingfoilers who already have some experience and are looking for a wing for manoeuvres, first freestyle tricks and excursions into the waves. If you are looking for a freeride foil that is as easy to ride as possible, you might miss some stability when travelling straight ahead.
