In connection with foils, the term"Aspect Ratio"This is, in simple terms, the ratio of wingspan to surface area. Wings with a"High aspect ratio" have a large wingspan in relation to the wing area and therefore a very elongated, slender wing shape - the result is higher speeds, but often also more demanding handling behaviour. With"Low aspect ratio foils" The situation is exactly the opposite, these have a smaller wingspan and therefore deeper and thicker profiled wings, which generally results in lower speeds, but also a more stable airflow and therefore easier handling ( HERE for basic information about foil).
Now Naish brings the MA line -"MA" stands for"Medium Aspect" - a new type of foil that combines the advantages of both worlds. We asked Michi Schweiger, Product Manager at Naish, what the idea behind this concept is.
Michi, what is the new Naish MA Foil all about? How does the foil concept differ from other models in your range?
The idea behind this is to bring an easy-to-ride wing onto the market that combines the early lift and good turning characteristics of our low-aspect foil Jet with the speed potential of a high-aspect foil. The result is the MA line, which is a lot of fun and appeals to a large target group. Beginners can already get to grips with it, but even experienced wingsurfers won't get bored with the wing because it is quite fast and easy to turn. The fact that the wing tips are not so sharp and pointed is also an important factor, as it minimises the risk of injury.
With the low-aspect model, you have"Jet" and the High-Aspect-Foil"Jet HA"You already have two different types of foil in your product range. Should the new Naish MA Foil complement or replace them?
The new foil is positioned somewhere in between. Newcomers to wingfoiling who already have some previous experience from other wind sports can start directly with it and even save themselves the "diversions" via the Jet model. You can also take off very early with the MA Foil and have more potential for your first jumps or even freestyle tricks.
No light without shadow - do you also see certain disadvantages of the MA concept for certain target groups?
I think it really is a very sophisticated product with a large target group. Of course, there are other foils at the edges of the range of use that have even more potential. Our Jet HA Foil is certainly a corner faster and has more glide potential for downwinders. At the lower end of the scale, our thicker profiled low-aspect foil Jet can score a little more points, but overall I think that the Naish MA Foil covers the widest range of use of all the models.
In which sizes will the new Naish MA Foil be available?
The new front wing will be available in five sizes: 850/1000/1200/1600 and 2000 cm2.
