The Foil Festival Fehmarn runs almost traditionally over the long Whitsun weekend, one week after the Surf Festival in the same place. For four days, professionals, beginners and water sports fans meet on the south beach to kick off the new season together. The festival combines competitions, an extensive beach expo and a varied supporting programme to create a complete package that reflects the rapid development of this young sport.
The Open German Championships in Wingfoil Freestyle are at the centre of the sports programme. The discipline demands spectacular tricks from the athletes on the foil: jumps, rotations and creative manoeuvres are judged by a jury. The aim is to present the most challenging combinations possible. Wingfoil freestyle combines elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing to create a unique style on the water.
Parallel to the German championships, the Winger of the Sea One Hour Edition takes place. The aim of this format is to complete the most laps around two moored buoys, which are around one kilometre apart, within 60 minutes. The format is aimed at all board classes, young people and female participants in particular and serves as an introduction to regatta surfing.
According to the organisers, the largest beach fair in the foil world will be held on the south beach with more than 40 exhibitors. Manufacturers show their latest developments and offer free testing directly on the water. The spectrum ranges from Wingfoil to Pump Foil, Downwind SUP Foil, Parawing, Electric Foil and Foil Surf. Confirmed exhibitors include AK Durable Supply Co, Appletree Surfboards, Armstrong, Axis Foil, Cabrinha, CORE, Cloud IX Surffoils, Duotone, Fanatic, Foildrive, F-ONE, Flysurfer, GA Wings, GA Foil, ION, JP Australia, Manera, Mystic, Naish, Neilpryde, North, Pro Limit, PPC Foiling, Sabfoil, Starboard, Tabou Boards, Vayu and Xcel. For four days, the south beach will be transformed into an open showroom for the latest water sports equipment on the scene.
Just a few metres from the water, the large beach camp is opening again this year. Surfers from all over Germany stay here together, swap stories and round off the evening with music and sea views. Those who want to start the day actively after a long night of partying can take part in Yoga4Surfer with Sascha Lange on the beach. An innovation awaits the community at Flaute: the Flaute playground. A skateboard mini ramp and a cross course for OneWheel and Surron are available here. The builders of the off-road course from Kliemannsland are responsible for the design and inspiration. Every day, visitors can try out their off-road skills on the surf course or watch a show to see what sports equipment and athletes are capable of.
The Foil Festival could be facing a spatial change in the coming years - just like the Surf Festival. A large-scale tourism project is planned for parts of the area on the south beach. Holiday flats and a five-star family hotel are being built there. This will permanently change the face of the south beach in the coming years. The organisers are already in intensive discussions with the authorities and landowners to find a new venue near the beach.
