GWA Wingfoil World Cup Tarifa: Tight World Cup race between Suardiaz and Novotna

The GWA Wingfoil World Cup Tarifa is organised as a pure freestyle event, with the height and power of the tricks shown being judged. "We want to see a lot of speed from the beginning to the end of the move," explained Head Judge Mallory de la Villemarqué. "Clean landings are also an important aspect of the judging."

The ladies completed their first three rounds on the first day in around 15 to 18 knots of wind. They performed front and backside 360s, raleys, air jibes and much more. Special focus is on Nia Suardiaz and Paula Novotna. If Novotna wins in Tarifa, she will be the 2022 World Champion. If Nia Suardiaz wins in her home territory, the decision will not be made until the last event of the year in Brazil.

Paula Novotna achieved the highest score of the day with 27.23 points, which was significantly higher than the rest of the field. The quarter-finals are next on the programme.

In the men's event, Balz Müller, a big favourite for the World Championships, is missing. The Swiss is still recovering from an injury sustained at the tow-in in Silvaplana. As a result, he is currently unable to defend his second place. On the first day in Tarifa, two representatives of the younger generation came into focus: Malo Guenole jumped the best frontflip of the day, Chris Mac Donald got the highest score overall. In the men's event, only the first round could be ridden before the wind died down.
