GWA Wingfoil World Tour: World Championships in Dakhla cancelled at short noticePhoto: GWA
The Wingfoil World Championships were actually due to take place in Dakhla, Morocco, from 6 to 11 October. Actually! Because the cancellation, just three days before the event was due to start, has caused quite a stir.

It’s not uncommon for events to be cancelled. However, for this to happen three days before the event is due to start is unusual:

The GWA regrets to announce that the World Championships, which were due to take place in Dakhla, Morocco, from 6 to 11 October 2026, have had to be cancelled. The cancellation is the result of circumstances beyond our control. (...) The GWA understands how disappointing this is for athletes, partners and fans who were looking forward to the season finale.”

However, no further details were given as to exactly what the “external circumstances” were that were cited as the reason for the cancellation at such short notice. This is particularly disappointing for the participants who were already on their way to the event. Consequently, the GWA’s decision has not been well received within the wingfoil community, where there has been talk of “unprofessional behaviour” and “a lack of transparency at the participants’ expense”.

As the event in Dakhla would have been the only one in the “Wave” discipline, there may be no title-holders in this discipline this year. Unless, of course, the GWA pulls another event out of the hat – perhaps at short notice.
