At least the fire-eaters were warm: with temperatures as low as minus ten degrees, the opening ceremony of the Ice Surfing World Championships in Sweden was warm to the touch. The races with wings, kites and windsurfing sails will run until 21 February on Lake Mälaren near Västerås, around 100 km west of Stockholm.
There have already been some training sessions and the opening ceremony to kick things off. The races will run until Saturday, with a marathon with all fleets starting together at the end. Will Tuthill, President of the responsible association WISSA, emphasises the importance of the event: "Ice and snow surfing is more than just a sport; it combines wind, winter and human creativity. The 2026 World Championships in Västerås will feature the best from our global community, united by a shared dream to give the sport the recognition it deserves."
