As part of Hanse Sail 2026, the Baltic Crossing Challenge will link two countries and two maritime traditions through a long-distance race across the open Baltic Sea. Between 6 and 9 August 2026, kitesurfers, wingfoilers and windsurfers will cover the approximately 48 kilometres between Gedser in Denmark and Warnemünde. The start will depend on weather conditions; the finish line is the beach at Warnemünde, where the Hanse Sail will be taking place at that time. The organisers are planning this pilot project as the foundation for an annual international event. The number of participants is initially limited to around 20 to 30 athletes to ensure the event can be held safely.
The Baltic Crossing Challenge is aimed exclusively at experienced athletes with a proven track record in downwind sailing or competitive racing. The organisers emphasise that participants must be able to handle their own equipment safely on open water. According to a press release, they are specifically seeking pioneers for the inaugural event who are ready to be part of this new format. Those interested can apply now via the official website, where all the necessary information and the application form can be found. Participants will be selected on the basis of the qualifications and evidence of experience submitted.
The athletes will travel to Gedser with Scandlines, whilst the equipment will be transported separately. Several support boats will ensure maximum safety throughout the crossing. The route has been planned to take maritime traffic into account and to comply with all regulatory requirements. Upon arrival in Warnemünde, participants can look forward not only to the Hanse Sail with its extensive maritime programme. In addition, all participants will receive a Pangea Festival ticket and an official Baltic Crossing Challenge event Lycra top.
