The third ProAm Windsurf Cup in a row took windsurfing pros and amateurs to Lake Wittensee at the weekend. It was all about the buoys in a one-hour format: whoever has the most laps under their belt within the time limit comes out on top. Three heats were held on Saturday, but unfortunately there was not enough wind for any more races on Sunday.
For the first time, not only windfoilers and windsurfers, but also wingfoilers were at the start at Wittensee. All riders took to the course together, while the windsurfers had to choose between fin and foil. Fabian Wolf dominated, winning all three races on Saturday and thus securing overall victory as a windfoiler ahead of the two wingfoilers Yannik Holste and Frank Rosin.
Fabian Wolf left nothing to chance from the very first race and dominated the field with impressive confidence. He completed the most laps in the timed races three times. The athlete, who normally competes in the Olympic iQFOiL Class, therefore led the rankings with the ideal score of 0.0.
Alexander Neubert follows in second place. The man from Neumünster, who is currently in third place in the Foiling annual rankings, lived up to his role as favourite. With three second places, he scored 6.0 points and secured second place. Sixteen-year-old Paul Regber follows in third place. With a second, a third and a fifth place, the current best young rider in the California Windsurf Cup totals 10.0 points. This confirms his outstanding performance so far this season. Jesse Richter and Hauke Kallsen complete the top five in the foiling discipline.
With his third place, Paul Regber also wins the Youth U21 classification of the ProAm Windsurf Cup Wittensee. Jesse Richter follows in second place in the Youth U21 classification ahead of Pelle Bo Behrendt. Eva Lotte Grünbaum follows as the best lady only one place behind. Paul Regber also won the pre-Olympic iQFOiL Youth&Junior Equipment classification. Eva Lotte Grünbaum secured second place ahead of Philipp Köhlert. Michael Brozio won the Grandmasters (over 50s) ahead of Finn Noer from Denmark and Michal Gerowski.
Due to the overall light wind, most of the riders who are normally active in both disciplines decided in favour of the foiling discipline and against starting on the fin. Jonne Heimann, however, did not miss the opportunity and won the Fin Slalom discipline on Lake Wittensee in a superior manner. After a second place in the first race, Heimann won the following two races. Oliver Schott started with a win and a second place, but in Race 3 he retired after a massive crash with an oncoming wingfoiler. Fortunately, neither of the two athletes was seriously injured. However, enough laps secured Schott a second place in the overall ranking. Bernd Langbehn followed in third place ahead of Hauke Drews and Robert Ahlborn.
As part of the ProAm Windsurf Cup, the wingfoilers also celebrated their contest premiere at Lake Wittensee. Nine wingers enriched the field of windsurfers and provided additional excitement. Yannick Holste won with two heat wins and a second place. Top favourite Frank Rosin followed in second place ahead of Kim Holste. Malte Pries and Kjeld Hansen completed the top 5 in wingfoiling.
As the organiser of the ProAm Windsurf Cup Wittensee, Peer Jensen once again managed to put together a successful regatta. As a timed race, the One Hour format offered an interesting change from the usual slalom formats. Due to the conditions and the participant structure, the regatta organisers made use of the option to shorten the race time. The majority of the racers welcomed the decision to shorten the race from one hour to 45 or later even 30 minutes. This did not detract from the basic idea of "just having a blast".
"I am absolutely thrilled with this weekend. The conditions on Saturday were just perfect - you couldn't have wished for better," said organiser Peer Jensen afterwards. "The constant wind with bright sunshine ensured that all participants got their money's worth and clearly enjoyed themselves, both on the water and on land. In the evening, we rounded off the event with live music, which ensured a great atmosphere and lots of good conversations. It was an all-round successful day. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough wind on Sunday to organise any more races. Nevertheless, the weekend was a complete success overall and the feedback from the participants was consistently positive. I'm already looking forward to next year!"
The next event of the California Windsurf Cup in Pelzerhaken is scheduled for the coming weekend.
