Lake Berzdorf is considered the windiest spot in eastern Germany. Local Philipp Kümpel was there and introduces you to the lake south of Görlitz.

Although Saxony is a long way from the North Sea or the Baltic Sea, its past as a mining region means that it now boasts numerous lakes that have been flooded and transformed into recreational areas over the last few decades (HERE you can find a guide to the Neuseenland Leipzig).

In the far east, right on the border with Poland and the Czech Republic, lies Lake Berzdorf, which has long since developed into a real water hotspot. From 2002 to 2013, the residual hole of the former Berzdorf open-cast lignite mine was flooded here. Whereby "hole" is a clear understatement in view of its dimensions, because with a volume of around 330 million cubic metres and a water depth of up to 72 metres over an area of 960 hectares, Lake Berzdorf is one of the largest lakes in Saxony.

Wanted! The Bohemian Wind

In principle, Lake Berzdorf can be used in all wind directions. Westerly winds are often very gusty and can suddenly break away or turn due to the shoreline development and topography. The lake is an absolute tip, especially in weather conditions with southerly winds, because here the Bohemian wind comes into play. The Bohemian wind is a cool downslope wind that occurs when cold air accumulates in the Bohemian Basin and then flows over the ridges of the low mountain ranges into Saxony. These weather conditions are often very stable, which gives Lake Berzdorf an above-average wind quota.

Deutsch Ossig - the hotspot on Lake Berzdorf

Thanks to its proximity to Poland and the Czech Republic, water sports enthusiasts from different countries can be found on the water together. The lake generally offers shallow water with small chop, but can sometimes produce waves a metre high during storms.

The entry area at the spot German Ossig is a little rocky in places, so shoes are no mistake. The standing area ends after a few metres, which is why it is also ideal for foiling. You rig and unrig on grass, and toilets and catering are also available seasonally. Just watch out for swimmers in the shore area and the liner that regularly makes its rounds here. Deutsch Ossig is particularly busy when the wind is blowing from the south, which is when the car park can get full. Kiting is prohibited due to the regular boat traffic. There are no restrictions for motorhomes, only parking fees have to be paid.

All in all, Lake Berzdorf is a really great spot with plenty of space, good wind conditions and even a bit of international flair. Come along and see for yourself!
