Cold but windy: Results in slalom, wave riding and freestyle at the Wingfoil Masters off Sylt
The California Wingfoil Masters at the Sylt Summer Opening brought four days of action to Brandenburg Beach. Despite unusually cold temperatures, the athletes delivered convincing performances in all three disciplines: freestyle, wave and slalom. Jonte Boysen dominated the freestyle, while Klaas Voget confirmed his role as favourite in the wave contest and Pit Hausberg was ahead in the slalom.

The California Wingfoil Masters at the Summer Opening Sylt ended on Sunday after four days with valid scores in all three disciplines. Although the temperatures for the official season opening on the North Sea island were still a far cry from summer, the wind ensured constant conditions. On Friday, however, high waves on Brandenburg beach prevented the wingfoilers from starting. On Saturday, the athletes had to wait for the low tide phase in the evening before they could take to the water. Matthias Regber from Choppy Water GmbH, which organises the Summer Opening Sylt, was satisfied despite the cold: "I have never experienced an event as cold as this year's California Wingfoil Masters at the Summer Opening Sylt. That's why I'm full of respect for the performances of the wingers, who once again put on a mega show on Brandenburg Beach."

Boysen triumphs in freestyle, Hausberg dominates the slalom

The freestyle decision was already made on the opening day. Jonte Boysen came out on top and won the overall classification, despite competing in the U15 category. The youngster defeated Jared Wegner in the final, while Hubert Christahl won the B final against U15 rider Lönne Jensen. Julian Furkmann completed the podium in the U15 juniors. In the U19 category, Wilhelm Christahl, Pit Hausberg and Piet Katenkamp shared third place. The conditions on the first day offered the freestylers enough wind for their manoeuvres, even though the cold demanded a lot from the athletes.

On Sunday morning, the subsiding waves finally allowed the boats to be slipped. The organisers held three races in the slalom discipline. The rough conditions caused numerous crashes and provided spectacular scenes for the visitors on Brandenburg beach. Pit Hausberg dominated this discipline with three victories in all heats and won with the ideal score of 1.4. Second and third place went to two U15 youngsters: Jonte Boysen and Emil Schacht put in strong performances against their older rivals. Quirin Olbrisch secured third place among the U15 juniors. Pit Hausberg, Jared Wegner and Aaron Olbrisch made up the youth U19 podium.

Voget brothers win wave contest

The wave contest took place over two days. The U19 and men's categories started on Saturday evening, while on Sunday it was the turn of the U15 juniors. As the reigning German champion, Klaas Voget confirmed his role as favourite and prevailed against Hubert Christahl in the final of both the men's and U19 categories. Wilhelm Christahl won the B final against Jared Wegner. In the U15 juniors, a Voget also stood on the top step of the podium: Tebbe Voget won in a close decision against Theo Buchwald from Fehmarn. Jonte Boysen secured third place in the B final against Julian Furkmann.

The windsurfers continue at the Summer Opening Sylt from Thursday. The California Windsurf Cup will make its traditional tour stop at Brandenburger Strand. Regber summarised: "It really was a great start to the summer season on Sylt. I'm already looking forward to the next few days with the windsurfers!"
