What makes the GWA Wingfoil World Cup so special could be admired again recently at the event in Tauranga/New Zealand: exciting races in the "FreeFly Slalom" discipline, radical tricks in "Surf Freestyle". And because new faces and newcomers regularly appear on the scene and give the established riders a run for their money, the first two seasons in the World Cup were anything but boring.
From the17-27 March 2023 a new chapter is now being opened on the Cape Verde island of Sal - the "Wave" discipline is celebrating its premiere. The aim is to string together as many fluid turns as possible on a large wave. Aerials will also be judged, but these are only permitted with a neutral wing. The event will take place at the legendary Ponta Preta break or, alternatively, at Kite Beach.
The prospect of heats at Ponta Preta in particular should make even seasoned wing pros break out in a sweat. The spot in the south-west of Sal offers one of the best waves on the planet, but also takes no prisoners if you make mistakes. The wave breaks powerfully here, close to the shore and along black lava rocks. Anyone who falls is washed directly into the rocks by the white water - so riders should have enough spare equipment at the start.
For Ponta Preta to come to life, it needs a north-westerly swell - and that is exactly what is already in prospect. The forecast currently promises 2.5 metres of swell with a 15-second period - but that means sets of over four metres here. The wind also seems to be playing along. With a bit of luck, the wave opener at the GWA Wingfoil World Cup could turn out to be highly spectacular.
