It's a perfect start for the new "Wave" discipline in the Wingfoil World Cup. The first sets at the legendary Ponta Preta break roll out right on time for the start. The new discipline is all about pure wave riding; the score is based on how many turns the riders string together and how smoothly and radically the turns are executed. At the same time, patience is required, as the good sets usually only come at irregular intervals.
Ponta Preta is undoubtedly one of the best waves in the world. If the swell direction is right, the wave runs several hundred metres into a bay and ends there in a crashing shorebreak - an absolute dream. But perfection comes at a price: if the swell is small (less than 2.5 metres in the sets), the wave breaks almost directly onto dry land. Foiling here is then more of a nightmare and the walk over the rocks inevitably ends with broken equipment - even the total prize money of 10,000 euros doesn't really help.
