Slipping out of the straps while wingfoiling during a jump is a nightmare for most people. For Fred Hope, such things are the salt in the soup. But even if this shoveit looks buttery smooth and very controlled, the move still has plenty of potential for disaster.

ARD programme - Foiling for people with disabilities

The idea of foiling as a wheelchair user seems absurd at first. But the "Sail United" water sports school in Großenbrode quickly convinces you otherwise and has come up with a learning concept that allows people with physical disabilities to get airborne quickly. You can watch the programme here in the ARD media library.

Eight things that are annoying about wings

To describe Philipp Kümpel as an absolute wing enthusiast would be an understatement. The Leipzig local regularly provides the scene with videos, interviews and stories about wingsurfing and windsurfing - and spends what feels like every free minute on the water. In this video, Philipp lets it all hang out: he lists the annoying things about wingfoiling! Tip: Watch to the end!

That really hit the nail on the head! Aleks Acherer chooses the emergency exit for this trick during the World Cup Costa Brava, but fortunately hits the ground next to the wing. Only in slow motion do you notice that the stabiliser of the foil damages the front tube of the wing and that it visibly runs out of air on impact.

The wild French are at it again - this time at the Defi Wing event in the south of France, where they were certainly not the fastest with this wing tridem, but definitely had the most fun. Three riders, one board, two foils - no wonder that the division of labour was a bit tricky.

Hardly any other water sports niche is developing as quickly as parawing, but these guys have overshot the mark. Wingfoil into the monster wave of Jaws? No problem for Kai Lenny! Kai uses extremely small foils with a surface area of just 400 cm2 so that he can ride the giant wave at all - and we're not talking about the stabiliser here, but the front wing. Kai also went tow-in surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddle surfing that day. So it was actually a completely "normal" day in Lenny's life.

The South African autumn has repeatedly delivered ideal conditions at the spots around Cape Town. At least if you take "ideal" to mean 40 knots of wind and big ramps. As harmonious as the coexistence between foilers and surfers may look in this video, anyone who clicks on the comments below this clip will quickly get a different impression. It was obvious: anything that is fun on the water will sooner or later end up in the hands of all-round waterman Kai Lenny. Benjamin May in the Föhn storm on Lake Uri

Benjamin May has presented a great clip of an extraordinary day in Switzerland: "At the beginning of this year, I was on the lookout for a big storm. And shortly after New Year, a big foehn storm came over the Alps," he writes about his ten-minute film on YouTube. "Normally we go to our local lake and get around 30 knots. But this time we were looking for something new. I checked every forecast and it looked very promising. Even the locals told me it could be one of the windiest storms of the year. So we made our way to Lake Uri." The lake in Switzerland is also an occasional destination for Balz Müller when it's really blowing. "When we arrived, the wind was blowing fiercely and I rigged up my smallest glider. It was one of the craziest sessions I've ever experienced and I'm already looking forward to the next storm."

No, of course, contrary to the caption, we're not watching a windsurfer here, but a winger. And even though the clip is a little older, it is no less spectacular: suddenly a jumping whale emerges from the water and checks the foiler off the board. On first viewing, this promo clip from Forward-WIP doesn't seem particularly eye-catching. But wasn't there something? Attentive observers will discover two curiosities: The double-decker front wing at the beginning of the clip is probably planned as an economic stimulus programme for the foil industry. Is this a design fail from the early days of foiling or the next trend?

Hamburg is perfect for exploring from the water, as not only the tourists on the launches in the harbour know, but also hordes of SUP and canoe paddlers. Benjamin May, on the other hand, prefers to pumpfoot: he set off on a very special sight-seeing tour through the canals and across the Outer and Inner Alster, past villas, cafés and idyllic parks. But the pump-foiling expedition also took him into the canals at the harbour and on the Elbe in front of the panorama of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall - always under the eyes of amazed spectators. "Pump foiling in Hamburg was an exciting adventure that brought the thrill of water sports to the centre of our cityscape," said the man with the legs of steel about his tour. "Hamburg's unique waterways provide the perfect backdrop for this innovative sport, which combines the energy of the city with the serenity of the water."

This finish not only hurts to watch, but also in real life. Ancor Sosa hits so hard here that he needs "a minute to himself" afterwards to sort out his bones. In the end, however, Ancor survives the fall without any injuries - and is guaranteed a place in the "Top Crashes of the Year".

Julien Rattotti is the reigning Big Air World Champion. The Frenchman is presumably currently training for his title defence mission. Looking at this clip, you can see that Rattotti has the necessary height, but still has some minor problems with board control. Julien takes a more relaxed view: "Everything is under control". He can prove this from 9 July, when the Big Air World Cup begins in Gran Canaria.

Mathis Ghio not only set a new speed record for wingfoilers in the south of France, but seven in one go: the highest speed, 1 second, 2 seconds, 10 seconds, 100 metres, 250 metres and 500 metres. "Yesterday's session was for the history books: 40-45 knots of offshore Tramontana wind in Le Rouet and plenty of motivation!" writes the Frenchman about his new records. However, he did not want to reveal exactly how fast he was, which will be announced at the weekend. Did he break 40 knots?

World premiere in wingfoiling: Lasse Harbacek has jumped the first double loop with the wing, the video of which he posted on Instagram yesterday. "I'm so happy that I finally managed this trick after all the ups and downs," he writes. "When I started this sport 4 years ago, I always had the dream of doing this jump while wingfoiling. Because I was never a really good windsurfer and this trick fascinated me so much. I decided that no matter how long it took, I would do this jump at some point in my life. But I never thought I would have the opportunity to jump a world premiere. When I tried it for the first time six months ago, I was so close. Unfortunately, I injured myself on the landing and was out for three months. The injury made me realise how important it is to prevent injuries through strength training. That's why I trained more during this time than ever before in my life. When I was finally injury-free again and wanted to try again after some time, I realised even more how much of a mental strain such an injury can put on you. I then tried to take a step back and do the things that I enjoyed the most at the time. Yesterday, I tried again in less than ideal conditions and got on well straight away. Now I'm more than motivated to tackle the next big project!"

Ever since French local Paul Artzner discovered the backflip for himself, it's better not to ride downwind of him on the water. After all, you could end up with a stray wingfoil board flying through the picture. In this case, you can only hope that there was some space - and that the board didn't burn up on re-entry into the atmosphere.

Malo Guénolé is one of the best wingfoilers in the waves. In this clip, he shows what is possible in typical Euro conditions with diagonal onshore winds and chest-high waves. His aerials in particular, which he likes to combine with rail grabs, are a real feast for the eyes.

Yes, Michael Näf and Joshua Pretorius are actually still in one piece. In view of this crash clip, which was shared by their joint sponsor Ensis, this is certainly not a matter of course, as some of the crashes shown really take your breath away.

For a moment, it looks as if Gregorio Pugliese will escape the four-metre-high wall of white water, but then Neptune decides otherwise. And so Gregorio gets a full washing programme that is a real wash. "But the equipment survived"The Italian summarised afterwards with relief.

No, Chris MacDonald is not the first to perform a double backflip on the water. Titouan Galea did it a few years ago on Maui. Since then, however, this move has disappeared into oblivion - it seemed too hard, too dangerous even for the most hardened pros. Now world champion Chris MacDonald has awoken the trick from its slumber. Let's hope it doesn't take another three years before the next one dares to try it...
