Less than a week ago, the pros of the GWA Wingfoil World Tour were still dueling on Sotavento Beach on Fuerteventura. Now, for the first time, important points for the wave ranking and 10,000 euros in prize money will be up for grabs at Saquarema Beach near Rio de Janeiro. For some pros, this meant stressful schedules and travelling and a start with jet lag. Whether it was due to the stress of travelling or not - with 25 starters in the men's event and only five female starters, the field of participants was somewhat smaller than last time. However, those who had made the journey were rewarded on the first day of the event: a moderate wind blew on the beach and impressive, head-high waves rolled into the beautiful sandy bay - for many a welcome contrast programme to the last two storm events in Pozo and Fuerte .
In Rio, the wave discipline is on the programme for the second time after its premiere on Sal in the spring. The aim here is to find the biggest waves possible and ride them close to the breaking part or even integrate aerials and tricks into the wave rides. So far, only the first heats have been ridden and there are no results yet.
