We tested the Amazfit T-Rex 3 outdoor smartwatch and compared it with its predecessor, the T-Rex 2.
Amazfit is now also compatible with the popular and widely used Komoot app. This allows bike tours to be planned with Komoot and mapped and tracked on the watch. We have tried out the upgrade.

We were able to Amazfit T-Rex 3, as an inexpensive alternative in the segment of robust outdoor smartwatches with tracking function, but also for windsurfing and everyday use, and also compare it with the previous model.
With the T-Rex 3 Amazfit presents the third generation of its popular outdoor smartwatch. We already had the Predecessor model extensively tested and also the slimmer, everyday Amazfit Balance. The latest version of the T-Rex 3, which is also comparatively inexpensive, is in the same league as significantly more expensive models in many areas or even surpasses them in some aspects. In the test, our focus was primarily on using it for tracking windsurfing and similar sports, while we only tried out the extensive smartwatch functions in passing.

Amazfit watches now with direct Komoot connection

Amazfit uses its own Zepp app for its smart watches, which already enables extensive analyses and tracking. A new feature is the direct connection to the Komoot app without the diversions via the GPX file described below. For example, you can plan your next tour in the Komoot app and then transfer it to your watch with just a few clicks once you have linked your Zepp and Komoot accounts. The T-Rex 3 then functions as a complete navigation device.

The route is displayed on the map, the watch vibrates before junctions and shows you all changes of direction with turn arrows. This worked very well during our test on a one-hour tour through unfamiliar woodland on trails and forest tracks. While the preview gives a rough overview, the watch shows all routes very precisely in navigation mode. The map can be "zoomed in" individually.

Amazfit T-Rex 3 as a smartwatch

The smartwatch functions include a comprehensive health and training programme with fitness apps, precise heart rate monitoring and individual training plans. From sleep tracking to encouraging reminders to get moving again, the watch offers a wide range of smart fitness functions. WhatsApp messages and text messages, including pictures, can be received on the display and can be answered directly on the watch thanks to the AI-supported voice function - a function that worked reliably in our few tests. A new feature is the option to load map material for navigation - which is less interesting for windsurfing than for biking or hiking, for example. GPX files from Komoot can also be imported and tracked using the Amazfit app "ZEPP", for example (Update: See above, a Komoot account can now be linked to the Zepp app, making the transfer much easier). The watch then gives warnings, for example, if you deviate from the planned track by an adjustable distance.

Amazfit T-Rex 2 vs T-Rex 3 comparison

Compared to the previous model, the T-Rex 3 has a slightly larger display (1.5 inches) with a very high pixel density (480 x 480), which makes it at least comparable with the top models of the leading brands. The display is colour-intensive and razor-sharp. Regardless of the theoretical specifications, the battery proved to be extremely powerful in our tests: it lasted for many days, if not weeks, during various training sessions and sometimes active smartwatch functions. Of course, the battery life depends heavily on individual use - whether you need to recharge after four days or only after two weeks. Charging itself is surprisingly quick: the watch is often 100 per cent ready for use again after just one hour. For charging, a small adapter plate with magnets is attached to the back, into which a USB-C port is integrated so that the watch is compatible with all standard chargers. The watch therefore requires no plug connections and offers good water resistance (100 metres). There is an incredible variety of display layouts to choose from in the app store, many of them free of charge.

What the Amazfit T-Rex 3 can do for windsurfing, wings or stand-up paddling

In the relevant windsurfing test area, the T-Rex 3 impressed with its fast GPS signal detection. Here, four different receivers work together to reliably determine the position. Hours of tracking only put a small strain on the battery, and the analyses of speed, position and heart rate were precise and reliable. As already suggested in the last test, a finer line guidance for the tracks would be desirable for sports that take place in confined spaces - at a higher level. For example, if you are wingfoiling on an area half the size of a football pitch for two hours back and forth, it would be easier to follow the exact track afterwards.

The display is particularly noteworthy: It is large and easy to read, even under extreme conditions such as maximum sunlight in South Africa. The touch display also works well with wet fingers, although the watch can also be operated using four physical buttons. Numerous sensors, including a barometric altimeter, provide additional data.

surf summary of the Amazfit T-Rex 3

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 (>> available here) is a successful further development of the previous model and continues to offer a wide range of useful functions in a slightly larger and even more robust-looking case, which is also very comfortable to wear during sport thanks to the soft, flexible wristband. The watch is not overly heavy. In our tests, the tracking for windsurfing, stand-up paddling, running and cycling (a total of 178 sports are included) was fully convincing. The casing and workmanship appear to be of high quality and the display remained without visible scratches even after weeks of use. Overall, it is a very versatile and robust outdoor smartwatch that should offer most users significantly more functions than they actually need. If you are interested, you can navigate the depths of the app and health functions almost endlessly.
