The ION Hardcap Select 3.2 water sports helmet is not short on good features. We strapped the model on and tell you whether the helmet confirms the good first impression on the water.

Because ION is rooted in a wide variety of fun sports such as wakeboarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing, there are two other models in the portfolio in addition to the Hardcap 3.2 Select test model, which differ in terms of design, some equipment features and, last but not least, price.

The ION Hardcap stands out with its very firm and rigid shell, which is complemented by thicker than average padding on the inside. However, some of the test subjects found the padding to be less comfortable due to the fact that it does not cover the entire surface of the head, but rather fits the head at certain points - we recommend trying the helmet on in a surf shop and forming your own judgement. The ear areas are covered by thick neoprene parts, a noticeable advantage in cold conditions. As the covers are attached to the helmet with solid press studs, there is no risk of losing them and you can switch to "draught" in summer. Keyword "draught": The holes in the ear covers should have been omitted - theoretically they are supposed to improve hearing, but in practice they cause annoying wind noise. However, the magnetic fastening of the well-padded chin strap is clever and a bag is also included.

WING conclusion:
The padding and shell of the ION Hardcap Select 3.2 have an above-average firmness and the features are convincing.
