DJI, known as a manufacturer of civilian drones and camera technology, is expanding its portfolio and entering the 360-degree camera market. The new Osmo 360 is available now and brings several technical innovations, including 1-inch 360-degree imaging and the ability to record native 8K video at up to 50 frames per second. Weighing just 183 grams, the camera offers a remarkable battery life of up to 100 minutes of 8K/30fps recording despite its compact design. The Osmo 360 is available in two versions: the Standard Combo for 479.99 euros and the more comprehensive Adventure Combo for 629.99 euros.
More about action cams:
At the centre of the Osmo 360 is the industry's first square "HDR" image sensor, according to DJI, which was specially developed for 360-degree images. Compared to conventional rectangular sensors, it is said to offer 25 per cent higher sensor utilisation, resulting in better image quality with lower power consumption. The pixel size of 2.4 μm is said to be twice as large as the industry standard and enables more image detail, less noise and better performance in low light. With a dynamic range of 13.5 f-stops and a fast f/1.9 aperture, the camera is also said to excel in high-contrast scenes such as sunrises and sunsets. "With the Osmo 360, DJI is challenging the status quo of the 360° camera market," explains Christina Zhang, Senior Director Corporate Strategy at DJI. "We are setting new standards for panoramic photography by drawing on DJI's long history of innovation in creative camera technology."
In addition to 360-degree functionality, the Osmo 360 also offers the option of functioning as a classic action camera. In single lens mode, it records 5K videos at 60 frames per second with a 155-degree ultra-wide angle. Boost video mode extends the field of view to 170 degrees and enables 4K recordings at 120 frames per second. The creative functions include the invisible selfie stick, which is automatically extracted from the 360-degree videos and thus enables recordings from a third-person perspective. For slow-motion shots, the camera can record 4K videos at up to 100 frames per second. Photos can be taken with a resolution of up to 120 megapixels. The camera can be operated using gestures or voice commands, enabling hands-free use. The stabilisation technologies HorizonSteady and RockSteady 3.0 effectively reduce camera shake.
For mobile use, the Osmo 360 is equipped with 105 GB of integrated memory. The camera is designed for extreme conditions and can record for over 1.5 hours at temperatures as low as -20 °C. The battery enables 100 minutes of continuous recording at 8K/30fps, which can be extended by a further 180 minutes with the separately available Osmo 360 Battery Extension Rod. Particularly practical: the camera can be charged to 50 per cent in just 12 minutes. The magnetic quick release design is compatible with accessories from the Osmo Action series and has a 1/4-inch threaded hole for attachment to conventional equipment. With the OsmoAudio Direct Microphone Connection, users can connect the Osmo 360 directly to two DJI microphone transmitters without a receiver.
DJI offers a wide range of accessories for the Osmo 360, including various selfie sticks, mounts and protective equipment. All accessories are available separately. With the DJI Care Refresh programme, customers can additionally protect their camera. The replacement service covers accidental damage including normal wear and tear, collisions and water damage. The one-year contract includes up to two replacement units, while the two-year contract includes up to four replacement units within 24 months. Other services include an official warranty, an international warranty service and free shipping.
