Now you're in for a treat. The South African brand "AK Durable Supply Co." is launching a helmet for windsurfers on the German market that combines protection and style. Our first test leaves us with a very good impression.

"I couldn't bear to look at all the things you see on people's heads when they're foil windsurfing," says Stefan Edtmayer from German distributor APM. It is questionable whether some of the revitalised children's bike helmets are really the best possible equipment. The new RIOT helmets from the brand " AK Durable Supply Co.", which have been CE certified specifically for water sports (CE 1385), are now designed to provide not only protection but also an acceptable look on the water.

Our test sample in size L-XLwas easy to adjust to a large head with the pads supplied, the specification for 59 to 61 centimetres seems to fit well. In comparison with other helmets tested ( Test in surf 6/2020 ), this also fits somewhat rounder heads well. As an additional size S-M, heads with a circumference of 56 to 58 centimetres are also well catered for. Size adjustment is mainly carried out using the numerous pads supplied, which are attached to the helmet using Velcro. At the front, back, sides and top of the head. After that, only fine-tuning is required with the screw tensioner at the back.

The helmet therefore fitsAlready very secure on the head, the chin strap does not need to be over-tightened. A solid fastener closes here. However - and this is actually the only minor criticism of the helmet - it is not padded.

The inner paddingis thinly covered with fabric and has a soft surface and medium-firm cushioning.

Plenty of ventilation openingsensure a good draught, the ears either remain free or can be closed well with the covers (available separately). Small ventilation slots are integrated into the covers.

Conclusion:The helmet has a high-quality appearance, from the shell and padding to the straps and fasteners. The customisation worked well. After the next windy phase, we'll be adding the accessories from our practical test. Price: 69 for the helmet plus 15 for the ear muffs.

He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
