The question of the right handle system for wings continues to divide opinion. While first-generation wings were often equipped with straps, manufacturers are increasingly focussing on hard handles or boom systems for current models, which offer more direct contact with the wing and, above all, allow the hands to be moved continuously and enable one-handed wingsurfing. However, there is now an upgrade option for all wingsurfers who still have a wing with soft grip straps and would like to ride it with a continuous boom.
Engineer Ekkehard Wurl has developed a system that can be installed in just a few minutes. You can see how it works in the following picture gallery. Click through!
Attaching the boom system is very simple: the two anchoring points made of flexible polyurethane have a slot at the top, where the grip loop of the wing is inserted. The wide base is supported by the centre strut of the wing. The parts are quite soft, but in our opinion there is no need to worry about damaging the centre strut. The corresponding counterpart is then attached to the boom, which can be inserted into the attachment points and secured with a small Velcro strip.
When fully assembled, the boom stands about ten centimetres in front of the handles. On the water, this allows you to grip intuitively and move your hands with millimetre precision. One-handed riding is also possible without any problems. The downside of the boom system is noticeable when pumping and also when performing tricks: The anchoring is comparatively soft, which means that contact with the wing is not as direct. On the other hand, it can also deform in the event of a fall, which can help to prevent injuries and damage. The boom itself is comfortable to grip and the additional weight of just under 380 grams remains within reasonable limits.
Ekkehard Wurl's boom system is simple and highly functional. The system offers the desired effect for leisurely cruising and freeriding. The boom system also has clear advantages for wingsurf beginners compared to the sometimes tightly sewn-on handles. The system is therefore highly recommended as a transitional solution, as it allows you to try out older wings with wide handle loops with Boom. If you have ambitious manoeuvres with fast wing rotations or even freestyle tricks on your agenda, you will find the system too indirect and will clearly be better off with a pure boom wing or hard handles.
