GunSails Hy-Wing
The Saarbrücken-based direct supplier GunSails offers the Hy-Wing model in three sizes. We tested the all-round model for wingsurfers.

The GunSails Hy-Wing on land:

The GunSails Hy-Wing is available in sizes 4.0/5.0 & 6.0, comes with a rucksack, pump and leash and costs between 699 and 789 euros, depending on the size. At a measured 2.42 kilos, the test size 5.0 is comparatively light, which is also due to the fact that, although not undersized, the equipment is limited to the bare essentials. As with all wings with windows, the Hy-Wing should only be folded below the window - GunSails has printed a marking for this purpose. The main valve on this wing is only used for inflation, the wing is deflated via a second valve, the position of which is not quite ideal for deflation.

On the water:

The Hy-Wing initially feels very light in the hand and is extremely playful. It responds well to pumping, but is a little less stiff than other wings - especially when heavy surfers pull on the handles. Nevertheless, even our 90-kilo testers didn't find the wing too soft or even spongy. The handles are very wide, which means that you can change your position when gripping and always find a suitable grip position to be able to ride with an even pull on both arms. However, the handles proved to be comparatively narrow, which doesn't exactly promote gripping comfort during long sessions or in strong winds - a little more padding would be desirable. Because the handles are cut very wide, you will always hit a loop when changing your grip in manoeuvres - even if you are not yet a dream surfer or are surfing with gloves in the cold season. However, the soft and wide loops also ensure very indirect contact with the wing. In light winds, this is hardly a problem, but in the upper wind range in particular, you want a much better grip on the wing - both in manoeuvres and when jumping. Apart from that, the Hy-Wing turns out to be neutral and easy to control, and you can let it drift without any disturbing life of its own.

Conclusion:

The GunSails Hy-Wing scores particularly well in the lower and medium wind range as a powerful and extremely light wing, which is also comparatively inexpensive. In the upper wind range, the handles noticeably limit control and ride comfort.
